This book traces the history of translation of the classical text Xiaojing 孝經(The Classic of Filial Piety). Pan Feng-chuan’s book takes as a case study the translations of the Xiaojingby Western missionaries and Sinologists in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In total she identified six translations: by François Noël SJ (into Latin, 1711), Pierre-Martial Cibot SJ (French, 1779), François-André-Adrien Pluquet (French, 1786), Elijah C. Bridgman (English, 1835), James Legge (English, 1879), and Léon de Rosny (French, 1889/1893). Pan Feng-chuan analyses the translations in chronological order and investigates the characteristics of each work. She first distinguishes the position or genre that the translators attribute to the work: literature, imperial instruction, moral or political exempla, popular teaching material, religious or sacred book. Next, she investigates how each of them was interpreted differently in its own context. This contextualization of the translation results in a trajectory of six successive phases: the Chinese rites controversy, the presence of missionaries at the court, the French Republican period, the development of educational material, the development of religious studies and of oriental studies. The work includes a very useful table with the parallel edition of the Chinese text with the six translations.
